PROGRAM

Prepare to embark on an unforgettable journey of storytelling, history, and heritage as we kick off Griot and Grey Owl 2024 with an inspiring and dynamic opening ceremony. This year, we are honored to present a captivating performance by Slam Charlotte, one of the nation’s premier slam poetry teams. Their powerful words will set the tone for the weekend as we delve into the theme of "Home & Heritage.

Following the performance, be uplifted by an evocative chant led by Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs - Duke Alum, a soulful moment of reflection that invites us all to center ourselves in the spirit of community and creativity.

Finally, our keynote speaker, Prentis Hemphill, will take the stage to deliver a thought-provoking keynote address. Prentis, known for their deep wisdom and work in healing justice and community organizing, will offer profound insights into the importance of storytelling, resilience, and breaking cycles.

This opening ceremony promises to inspire, challenge, and set the stage for an impactful weekend of learning, sharing, and connection. Join us after the performance and keynote for book signing and a Q &A as we kick off a weekend celebrating Black literary voices.
