John Rutter’s music has been a significant part of the world’s choral music for decades, charming the listener with its simple elegance and endearing charm. Few, if any, contemporary composers have written so many choral pieces, or have had their works more frequently performed by thousands and thousands of different choirs. As he turns 75, the Choral Society pays tribute to Rutter’s remarkable compositional career, performing one of his most gripping and dramatic works, his Requiem. French composer Louis Vierne, who was the principal organist at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris for 37 years despite being legally blind from an early age, wrote his beloved Solemn Mass for 2 Organs and Choir while still serving as assistant organist to Charles-Marie Widor at church of St. Sulpice in Paris. We honor his life and music on the occasion of his 150th birthday, even as we continue to grieve the momentous damage done to Notre Dame Cathedral by the rampaging fires this past spring.
