ABOUT

Celebrated jazz musician Christian McBride is a great virtuoso of the bass, and part of an exclusive lineage of bassist-bandleaders. In the twenty-five years since McBride’s debut with saxophonist Bobby Watson, McBride has become a commanding leader and vital sideman, playing on an astounding three hundred albums and winning five GRAMMY Awards along the way. McBride is the musician all the stars want in their corner, from James Brown to The Roots and D’Angelo. Newly named artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival, McBride is the essential bassist of his generation.

The ballroom at the 21c Hotel offers a rare chance to hear this jazz virtuoso in an intimate setting. In Durham, McBride will be playing with his new hard swinging trio Tip City; the ensemble features McBride on bass and the exceptional young musicians Emmet Cohen on piano and Dan Wilson on guitar. (Note: McBride has put his trio with Christian Sands and Ulysses Owens, Jr. on hiatus.)

McBride explains the new band’s name:
"Tip City is a catchphrase I learned from older musicians when I first started playing gigs around New York in the late 80’s. It was code for swinging hard. After playing a set with the late, great drummer Billy Higgins, or the late, great pianist James Williams, they would raise their hand in hi-five position and happily declare, 'That was Tip City!' With that in mind, I’ve named this band after its perpetual metaphoric destination, Tip City.”

Jazz at the 21c is presented in collaboration with the 21c Museum Hotel Durham.
