Perhaps best-known as the former guitarist and singer for the experimental rock band Battles, Tyondai Braxton orchestrates electronic loops in real time to create a hallucinatory terrain of melody and texture, splitting the difference between the impromptu experiments of Brian Eno and the angular glitches synonymous with Braxton’s primary record label, Warp.
Colin Stetson has achieved undreamt-of success for an experimental bass saxophonist, collaborating with everyone from The Arcade Fire and Bon Iver to Laurie Anderson and David Byrne, and landing his album New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges on the 2011 Polaris Prize shortlist. Eschewing digital looping technology in favor of carefully placed microphones, Stetson enlarges ambient sounds — from the percussive clack of valves to red-hot microphone signals — and incorporates them into his mighty ostinati.
In two solo sets, via very different means, these young visionaries will create a night of visceral, beautiful, cutting-edge music.
